The Hakomi Institute provides professional training in the Hakomi Method of Body-Centered Psychotherapy for psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists (and other mental health professionals) and body-workers. The institute also offers introductory weekend workshops in Hakomi for professional and personal development. The teaching of the Hakomi Institute is based on the work of Ron Kurtz with refinements, developments and integration of current research by the Hakomi Institute trainers. (The original method is described in the book Body-Centered Psychotherapy - the Hakomi Method (Kurtz, R., 1990).)
Hakomi is a powerful psychotherapy method that integrates highly effective Western therapeutic techniques with the safety, mindfulness and respect found in the Eastern spiritual traditions of Buddhism and Taoism. It was founded in 1981 by Ron Kurtz and his colleagues and has since been refined and taught worldwide.
Hakomi uses the body as a doorway into the unconscious, into the hidden beliefs (core material) that influence and shape our lives, relationships and self image. Hakomi is a fast and powerful method that allows accesses to this core material so that it can emerge safely into our consciousness where it can be re-evaluated and transformed. The individual can then integrate new ways of being that are more satisfying and effective in life. Central to the Hakomi method is the healing relationship between the client and therapist that creates a deep sense of safety and connection that facilitates the therapy.
Please note: Currently, the Hakomi Educational Network, the Hakomi Center of Ashland and Donna Martin teach the Refined Hakomi Method, also called Hakomi and 'assisted self study': which while sharing the principles and some skills, differs from Hakomi Psychotherapy taught by the Hakomi Institute. It is an excellent training for personal growth and for those wishing to assist others in self discovery. In Alberta, Donna's website is www.hakomialberta.ca - this is NOT associated with the Hakomi Institute.
